This is an all-new chipset software installer with updated UI, optimized package size, package versioning unique to the chipset drivers, and improved installer performance. AMD (Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.) is a multinational company specializing in the design of microprocessors and related technologies. Its main products are central processing units, graphics processors, motherboard chipsets and computer memory.
At the time of writing, it appears that Gigabyte is the only manufacturer currently confirmed to be offering this new chipset driver update. Given the masses of motherboard firms though, it’s entirely possible that there may be a few others out there. – For desktop users though, unless you’re planning to upgrade to the 5800X3D, you shouldn’t feel any need to rush to get this installed. In fact, if you’re not planning to upgrade at all, you might be able to skip this one entirely. With its release still just under two weeks away, AMD driver however, you would’ve been forgiven for thinking that this update would likely drop a day or two before the processor’s actual release.
We generally recommend anything based on its stock, out-of-the-box performance. But Intel has released a product that’s compelling enough for a section of workstation users that we can’t just ignore it. However, Ryzen’s release took even the most vocal AMD fans by surprise.
Our first tests of L3 cache bandwidth were quite surprising. AIDA measured 7.5X more L3 read bandwidth, 15X more write bandwidth, and 12X more copy bandwidth for the Ryzen X in Windows 10, and similar results with the Ryzen X and 3800X. Notably, copy bandwidth is the only measurement of the three that’s indicative of application performance. AMD’s original advisory pointed out that some eSports games can suffer 10 to 15%, but we didn’t see that in any of our tests. That doesn’t mean such deltas don’t exist, as different games and applications are impacted differently, so your mileage will vary.
Even the display capabilities have gotten this granular power management, by introducing the ability to refresh portions of the display instead of the full screen with every change. Instead of refreshing the empty margins of a document, the processor can now tell the display to refresh only the portions with text, or sections of a webpage instead of the full screen. Functional changes ramp up the efficiency, as well. The chip can transition to deeper sleep states with faster sleep and wake times. Initialization times are sped up by skipping the power-down/power-up process used by the L3 cache, while a new “dirtiness counter” monitors that cache to determine when it needs to be cycled down to recover.
Finally, all available updates will appear under Status. If you have activated Download drivers and software, Radeon Software will ask you to install the downloaded updates. So, install them and close the program when you are done. First, the “recommended” driver updates are those that AMD recommends to all users. After internal testing, updates are sent to Microsoft and receive Microsoft Windows Hardware Quality Labs certification. Certification ensures pilots are ready for mass adoption.
